When Smitty of
Poor Boys Boxing and Sven Bean of
Ring of Fire fame, put together a contest, they seemingly have the power to
stop trains and rains when both were ever-present during this match-up under
some threatening skies Saturday night.
This was a fun action-packed evening of mixed fight events
beginning with 3 women’s Muay Thai contests, 3 MMA
bouts and 4 boxing competitions including one for a title belt.
As the girl events got underway, a large freight train
pulled up and stopped on the tracks right outside Softball Country. He must have sat there for a half hour
watching the fights before loudly sounding the train whistle and chugging on
down the line. Now that was a different sort
of spectator!
The results of the bouts, in order, were as follows:
1: Sarah Padilla over Daniela Hogel
in a Muay Thai bout decided in a unanimous decision from the judges.
2: Rachel Sahlberg over Kristina Knezel,
again a Muay Thai bout that came down to a unanimous decision from the judges.
3: Lauren Sugihara proved that
beauty does not belie brawn as she won her Muay Thai bout against Jessica
Hollenback in a unanimous decision highlighted with incredible cardio, kicks
and strikes from both fighters.
4: The first
men’s MMA event was between the
crowd favorite Justin Griffis
who won decidedly over Rocco DePaulo with a TKO a mere 56 seconds into Round 1.
5: For a
professional boxing match, this one went a scant 36 seconds into the first
round before Jairo Delgado
decidedly took a TKO win over Javier Sequira.
6: In an
unfortunate set of landings, Justin
Gaejthe did legitimately take the win over Ben Deanda although Deanda
had to be removed from the ring on a body board and taken away by ambulance
when unintentionally dropped on his head and rendered unconscious as Gaejthe
maneuvered to extract himself from a triangle choke. This had followed an initial body slam from
Gaejthe. No announcement was made
regarding Deanda’s condition before the crowd disbanded at the end of the night
although our party floated up prayers for his safety and full healing.
7: In this
heavyweight boxing match, John Kiser
inflicted heavy damage against the unflagging Jose Beltran before his corner
threw in the white towel to indicate that they had seen enough to save Beltran
for another competition another day. The
win was awarded to Kiser 2:58 into Round 3.
8: In a contest
between Brad Jackson and the
shorter reach and shorter stature Julio Lanzas, the judges gave the win to Brad
Jackson by split decision. It was clear
by the very unsubtle boos from the crowd that it was seen to be a different
outcome from the audience perspective.
9: In a display
of talented MMA heavyweights, Ken Kreuscher took the win from
Coy Sasse a short 1:06 into
Round 1 by TKO. I had recently
interviewed a debut fighter, Jason Lee, who has Ken Kreuscher as his coach so I
was eager to see the big man in the ring.
The power and technique of a teacher as opposed to that of a trained
fighter was evident as he wasted no time in conquering his opponent.
10: In the final
belt-deciding middle heavyweight title fight of the night, there was no
decisive winner until the final and 8th round. Although the decision was ultimately decided
by the judges, they had no trouble awarding a unanimous victory to Patrick Thompson over Victor
Villareal. This now gives Patrick
Thompson the super middleweight title belts for both Colorado and Nebraska.
Where will we see this young superstar next?
The outdoor venue of Battle
Under the Stars was unique and fun. As
I sat with ColoradoFightEvents President Dan Magnie and Content Manager Chris
Stinnett in the bleachers at Softball Country with a gentle wind keeping us
cool on this night where the day had seen triple digit heat, we were grateful
for the overcast skies but the restraint of the few raindrops not turning into
a downpour. I had overheard Colorado
Boxing Commissioner Josef Mason giving instructions to the fighters prior to
the start of the evening. It had been
the plan that if there was to be a rain significant enough to have to stop the
action, that once the fight resumed, the fighters would be returned, as closely
as possible, to the position that had held prior to the stoppage. Thank goodness that never happened and the
few drops we did experience, were more refreshing than annoying.
