Friday night, November 23, 2007, the Red and Jerry's Event Center presented their MMA show, Colorado Cage Wars.
Other promoters have held shows at this venue, but this was the initial foray into promoting for the event center itself. The fight card filled out with new combatants, female
competitors and local fan favorites.
November 14, 2007, the Boulder County
Fairgrounds in Longmont, Colorado again hosted a
night of fights put on by, "Who's Your Daddy Productions."
The
evening featured one Men's MMA bout, one Women's Muay Thai bout, two Men's
Muay Thai bouts (one for a title), two Men's boxing bouts and one Women's
championship boxing bout.
Jamie Addie
of Elite Fighting Xtreme is a dynamo - both a promoter and a fighter. This is a young man whose name will become a
household name among the local MMA fan base as his first "Evolution" event at
the Wells Fargo Theater in the DenverConvention Center was an impressive card of fighters in a fabulous
venue.
The DenverConvention Center is a beautiful building and the Wells Fargo Theater
has great acoustics, an open area in front of the stage that is probably used
most often for orchestras but on Saturday night, was the perfect size for a
fight cage with tables for the judges, physicians, photographers and boxing
commissioners.
Do you remember as a kid that at the back of the comic book
there was a photo of a wrapped gift box surrounded by a halo of question
marks? This was the "surprise box" that
you paid $4.95 for and were guaranteed a gift much greater than the price would
indicate.THAT is what Kick Down 43 was
all about.Steve Alley, the charismatic
local Ring Announcer/Promoter, had some challenges leading up to Kick Down 43
when many of his scheduled fighters were determined ineligible due to injuries
inflicted on them in other recent bouts. It's not that Steve had a lack of fighters to choose from - there are
many eager fighters seeking a chance to be spotlighted in one of Steve's Kick Downs
- but, as the professional that he is,Steve wanted to be sure to have his card consisted of well-matched
fighters. Many of the fighters on the
card Friday night were either having their debut bouts or were at least unknown
to the local fan base. But, like the
"surprise box" - the little-known fighters did not disappoint the assembled
crowd. Some of these names will surely become
well-known in the local fight community after Friday night.
In preparing for my interview with Matt Serra, I had read
that he was 5 ft 6 inches tall. That was
not, however, my impression when I met him emerging from his drivers' car at
the Douglas County Fairgrounds on Sunday where he gave a training clinic to
about 70 - 80 serious students of the fight. He was so much bigger - both in demeanor and also seemingly, in
stature. His neck was as wide as his
head and he exuded solid strength and power.
As Dan Magnie of ColoradoFightEvents.com and I walked
from the parking lot a full hour before the show was set to begin, we were
impressed by the turnout for the event. We have covered many shows but don't recall the number of cars lined up
to get into the parking lot and actually honking at the slow pace of the
attendants collecting the cash.We
followed people scurrying down the sidewalk, yelling at their comrades to hurry
up - that the event was about to begin. There were people lined up outside Will Call and the Cashiers' windows
for their tickets. It seemed clear to us
that the television advertisements we had seen leading up to this night had
done their job at pulling the fight enthusiasts out for an evening of MMA
excitement.

The World Combat League (WCL)
is launching their second season at the Denver Coliseum Friday night, October
19th.
This is not just
another fight.
This is a league
founded and launched by Chuck Norris -- world famous film and television star --
who has been practicing martial arts
since before many of us were born!
Being a Chicago transplant, I still have not explored all the nooks and crannies of Colorado. I found myself excited to be covering the Comcast sponsored NME and Bad Boyz Clash of the Titans MMA match in Pueblo, Colorado this past Saturday September 3oth.
The event was held at the State Fair Grounds which was a great venue for MMA with dramatic lighting and powerful sound. There had been about 1000 tickets pre-sold and there were approximately another 1000 - 1500 tickets sold at the door. The sounds of the crowd were indications that everyone attending the event was invested in the outcomes of each match.
